They are adept at guiding you through your concussion journey, understanding its intricacies and possessing the expertise to facilitate your return to the activities you cherish.

Concussion is an insult to the brain which is also defined as a Mild traumatic brain injury.

It can occur with or without an impact to the head. It can be of differing degrees and affects people differently. It occurs when the axons between the white and gray matter are stretched, causing a shearing force between the neurons in the brain resulting in microscopic damage. Even though concussion cannot be seen on imaging it is still an injury which may need treatment and management by a physiotherapist.

Concussion impacts everyone differently. People with mild concussions can present with symptoms such as:

  • Headache

  • Dizziness

  • Lightheadedness

  • Nausea

  • Sensitivity to light or noise

  • Brain fog

  • Fatigue

Most concussions resolve within 14 days; however sometimes they may not resolve and people can have symptoms for longer. This is called Post Concussion Syndrome. This can impact your work, school, return to sport and everyday life activities.

We offer a concussion service which involves assessment:

  • Vestibulo Ocular assessment

  • Cervical assessment

  • Neuro cognitive testing

Treatment for concussion is always dependent on the findings from the assessment, but may include

  • Oculomotor retraining

  • Hands-on treatment

  • Neck strengthening exercises

  • Exercise prescription

  • Accommodation retraining

  • Gaze stability retraining

  • Return to sport, work or school planning

Depending on how your concussion affects you, we can offer advice on how to manage symptoms as well as tailored treatments to treat oculomotor or cervical issues that may result. We can also provide guidance and plans for return to work or sport so that your concussion doesn't stop you from doing the activities that you love.

Due to the complex nature of Concussions, these are only provided by Physio Olivia, and require a longer initial consultation, so ensure you book for a Concussion Initial Physio Consultation when you book online.
